B.C. RCMP Hunts Surrey Extortionists Amid 35th Case
RCMP urges public calm as Surrey reaches its 35th extortion case this year.

On January 20, 2026, B.C. RCMP Assistant Commissioner John Brewer announced that the force is "actively hunting" extortionists after Surrey police reported the 35th suspected extortion case of 2026 – the city’s 132nd attempt and 49th shooting in 2025. The task force, formed in mid‑September 2025, has processed 32 files, secured charges for seven individuals, obtained 100 judicial authorizations and identified 111 foreign nationals possibly inadmissible to Canada, with nine already deported. Surrey, BC’s second‑largest city, along with Delta and Abbotsford, has seen disparate impacts on South Asian communities. Brewer insists the situation is not a crisis but a serious public‑safety threat.
