Bay d’Espoir Hydro Plant Power Restored
Power at Bay d’Espoir plant is slowly restarting after ice removal.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro announced that after a month‑long ice buildup shut down the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric plant, power is gradually coming back online. Vice‑president of engineering Rob Collett said divers removed ice sheets the size of mattresses overnight on Saturday, leaving only one of four penstocks blocked. Seven generators now operate, with six up and a factory‑default unit running near capacity; the third unit’s turbine is scheduled for overhaul by January 31. A power warning remains in force for the island; residents are still urged to conserve energy and rotating outages may continue. Schools are slated to reopen Monday, while municipalities such as Corner Brook and Mount Pearl have closed public works to protect the grid.
