Barron Trump alerts police; convicted of London assault

On 28 January 2026, Sky News announced that 22‑year‑old Russian national Matvei Rumiantsev was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a woman in London on 17–18 Jan 2025. The prosecution also convicted him of perverting the course of justice after he mailed the victim from prison asking her to withdraw her allegations. The case gained international attention when 19‑year‑old US president’s son Barron Trump, then in New York, called UK police on 999 and reported the victim “being beat up” during a video call, prompting the police investigation. Rumiantsev’s defence argued that a FaceTime call from Trump had turned his phone’s screen onto the victim, who was crying on the floor. The jury acquitted him of rape and strangulation related to the same incident and of a separate alleged rape in November 2024.
