Barcelona to Open Spain's First Public Pet Cemetery
Spain's largest city will open a municipal pet cemetery in 2024 to meet growing demand.

Barcelona will establish Spain's first public pet cemetery in 2024, a €200 per service facility expected to handle 7,000 pet burials and cremations annually. The initiative follows years of public demand in a city where 180,000 dogs and 50% of families own pets. Previously, only private pet cemetery services were available. The municipal cemetery will offer both burial and cremation options. This development reflects changing societal attitudes toward pets as family members, with historian Eric Tourigny noting that modern pet burials mirror human funeral practices. Historic pet cemeteries in London (1881), New York (1896), and Paris (1899) demonstrate this trend's longevity. The Barcelona project aims to provide affordable, dignified pet burial options while addressing the emotional needs of grieving pet owners.
