Andy Burnham facing 24-hour ultimatum over his Labour future

On 23 January 2026 Sky News reported that Labour’s National Executive has issued a 24‑hour ultimatum to Andy Burnham, the party’s ‘king of the north’, giving him until 5 pm Saturday to decide whether to stand in the forthcoming Gorton & Denton by‑election. Applications opened Friday 5 pm and close at midnight Sunday, with a shortlist due Monday, short‑listing interviews Tuesday, hustings and final selection Saturday. Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester’s Gorton and Denton since 2017, would need to resign as mayor to run. The seat was triggered by Andrew Gwynne’s resignation on health grounds after racist WhatsApp messages. Labour holds a 13,413‑vote majority but faces a “stop Burnham” push and opposition from Reform UK, the Green Party, George Galloway and Zack Polanski.
