Alberta launches judge‑led inquiry into a man’s death after 8‑hour wait at Edmonton ER.

Alberta’s health ministry announced on Jan 15 2026 a judge‑led fatality inquiry into the death of 44‑year‑old Prashant Sreekumar, who died on Dec 22 while waiting nearly eight hours at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton. Minister Matt Jones said the independent review is needed to answer questions about his care. The inquiry will issue public findings and recommendations. The announcement also introduced a pilot triage liaison physician role in Alberta’s busiest emergency departments in Calgary and Edmonton, with the aim of speeding critical assessments. Hospitals report 102 % occupancy – including surge spaces – and a recent 336‑bed allocation for flu patients, while respiratory‑virus admissions fell from 995 at the end of December to 675 today. Overall, emergency‑department overflow has driven a 77 % rise in patients leaving un‑seen since 2019.
