Albanese visits Timor-Leste, deepening Australia ties
PM Albanese visits Timor‑Leste to strengthen ties and tackle economic, security, and development issues.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese arrived in Timor‑Leste on January 28, 2026, marking his first official visit to the former Portuguese colony that gained independence in 2002. The 700 km‑distant nation, which endured 24 years of Indonesian occupation, has a per‑capita GDP of $1,502 compared to Australia’s $64,604. During the trip, Albanese will meet President José Ramos Horta and former President Xanana Gusmão, address a joint parliamentary session, and receive Timor‑Leste’s highest civilian award. Discussions will focus on sustaining economic growth amid a drying oil‑gas revenue stream, expanding the $A50 billion Greater Sunrise gas field, and reinforcing security ties, while stressing that the mission is not about China. The visit also highlights people‑to‑people initiatives such as the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme and the New Colombo Plan, now extended to Timor‑Leste for 2026.
