Albanese Names Greg Moriarty Washington Ambassador
Albanese appoints Defence Secretary Greg Moriarty as Washington ambassador, replacing Kevin Rudd.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on 25 January 2026 that Defence Department Secretary Greg Moriarty, 61, will become the country’s next ambassador to Washington, Washington, D.C., succeeding Kevin Rudd, who will leave the post in March. Moriarty has led the Defence Department since 2017, previously served as ambassador to Indonesia (2010‑2014) and Iran (2005‑08), and commanded U.S. Central Command in the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His defence‑and‑diplomacy background is seen as a safe fit for the upcoming expansion of AUKUS, the trilateral security pact with the United States and United Kingdom. The appointment, vetted by the U.S. administration, aims to avoid the political controversies that shadowed Rudd’s tenure.
