On 15 January 2026, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan spoke at the annual government dinner at Mansion House, warning that artificial intelligence could become a “weapon of mass destruction of jobs” if the city does not act swiftly. He said the impact on London’s labour market would be “colossal,” with entry‑level positions, especially in finance, professional services and creative industries, most vulnerable. To counter this, Khan announced a new AI taskforce and free AI‑skills courses for all Londoners. The mayor called for faster regulation, skills reform and leadership that embeds AI in every sector, urging the capital to shape the technology responsibly and safeguard economic growth.
