Afghan Girls Fight Taliban School Ban With Underground Network

After the Taliban retook power in August 2021, Afghan law banned girls from secondary education. Over the past four years, thousands of girls have turned to clandestine classrooms and online tutoring networks. Toronto‑based Daricha School, founded by Hazrat Wahriz, now supports 175 teachers and more than 6,000 students in over 30 hidden classes across Afghanistan. Since opening in October 2021, no Daricha class has been raided, thanks to community backing. The Right to Learn Afghanistan reports 201 covert providers averaging 948 learners each, 700 girls linked to 480 tutors worldwide, and 49 graduates now studying abroad. These efforts counter rising child‑marriage rates, curb poverty, and offer an alternative to forced marriages, giving girls a chance to pursue higher studies and later careers.
