Seven Canadians were among dozens injured when two tourist trains collided head-on on the railway leading to Machu Picchu in Peru on December 31, 2025. The crash occurred on a route serving the UNESCO World Heritage Site, killing one train driver and injuring 40 people. According to health officials, about 20 people were in serious condition. The collision involved trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., which transport tourists to the historic Inca citadel. Global Affairs Canada confirmed providing consular assistance to affected Canadians while privacy considerations limited further details. Pictures showed badly damaged locomotives and injured passengers being treated on the tracks. Police have launched an investigation into the accident.
