39 Dead in High‑Speed Train Collision Near Adamuz, Spain

On Sunday, 18 January 2026, a high‑speed train collision near Adamuz in Córdoba Province, southern Spain, killed at least 39 passengers and injured 159. Trains headed from Málaga to Madrid and Madrid to Huelva collided when the rear of the Málaga‑bound train derailed and struck the inbound train, crushing its first two carriages and sending them down a 4‑metre slope. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the deadliest fatalities were in those carriages. Rescue operations, led by police, civil guard and Red Cross, continued as bodies were recovered from twisted metal. President Juanma Moreno described the scene as a “mass of twisted metal.” President Pedro Sánchez offered national condolences, and EU officials monitored the incident.
