3.7‑Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Central Ontario
A 3.7‑strength quake rattles central Ontario, felt from Niagara Falls to Belleville.

On Tuesday night, January 28 2026, Earthquakes Canada recorded a 3.7‑magnitude earthquake in central and southern Ontario. The tremor’s epicenter lay 23 km southeast of Orillia, at a depth of 5 km, and it was described as barely felt but noticeable. The Canadian press reported at least 2,000 “felt it” submissions spanning Kitchener in the west, Toronto, Belleville in the east, and down to Niagara Falls in the south. No damage or injuries were reported, and the Beaverton artist Sarah Cowley reported floor shaking in her 120‑year‑old home. Earthquakes Canada notes only two comparable events in the past 25 years, the largest being a 5.5‑magnitude quake in 1929.
